The walk in detail

Updated in January 2026, the route guide gives 9.76 kilometres, 566 metres of ascent and an average walking time of 4 h 25. It classifies the route as difficult. These figures refer to this precise loop; other Caume routes may be shorter, longer or start on another side. Allow a generous half-day, or longer when including access and a picnic. The descent is not a quick, straightforward return: rocky stretches and direction changes require attention.

Old military structures form part of the scenery. They show the strategic role of these heights, but should not be treated as playgrounds or invitations to enter deteriorated buildings. Observe from authorised areas without crossing fences or exploring unsecured structures.

The trailhead is at Col du Corps de Garde, in the commune of Évenos. Save the complete route and read its description before leaving the car park. An offline map, enough battery and a backup navigation option are useful. Do not automatically follow a secondary track on the ground even if it seems to shorten the loop.

The route guide lists no water point on the hike. Carry your own supply and something to eat. Shoes that support the foot and, if you are used to them, walking poles make rocky descents more comfortable. On exposed ground, wind can make conditions feel very different from the car park. Avoid intense heat, thunderstorms and conditions that make footing unreliable. Check fire restrictions too.

It suits visitors who already walk regularly and want to devote a substantial part of the day to the outdoors. For a first introduction to Toulon, Faron by cable car provides a panorama with far less commitment.
