La Mitre is a small rocky beach near the Tour Royale. It takes its name from a rock shaped like a bishop’s mitre. It is a good spot for a swim followed by a walk around the neighbourhood.
The beach and its surroundings
The upright rock in the water resembles a bishop’s mitre and provides the beach’s visual landmark. Changing light strongly affects the atmosphere. A visit outside the swimming season can be rewarding for photography or a quiet pause, although you should keep a safe distance from rocky edges.
Choose La Mitre for a relatively short swim followed by a walk through the neighbourhood or towards the Tour Royale. It is less convenient than a large beach when you have bulky equipment, a heavy pushchair or a substantial picnic.
The council identifies access from Quai Bellerive and the Tour Royale car park as a parking option. The council also states that the beach closes from 9.30 pm. Follow the times displayed locally even if you would like to spend the evening beside the water.
In neighbouring Le Mourillon, Fort Saint-Louis recalls the coast’s role in defending Toulon.
