At Les Vieux Salins, former salt-production ponds now attract many birds. Bring binoculars to explore both the wetland and traces of the industry that shaped this coast.
The walk in detail
Hyères’ saltworks comprise two separate areas: the Vieux Salins and the Salin des Pesquiers. This guide concerns the Vieux Salins and their Espace Nature. The Pas du Saunier path and restored Pesquiers waterwheel belong to another area; do not look for them at the same entrance. At the Vieux Salins, begin with the Espace Nature information and the public discovery route. Some naturalist visits enter supervised areas and require booking; independent exploration is not a substitute.
Binoculars are particularly useful. Stay in one place for a while, let the surroundings settle and watch movements from a distance. The birds visible depend on season and conditions; the visit does not promise a specific species every time. With children, compare ways of moving: one bird walking in water, another swimming, or a group taking flight. Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux outings allow a deeper exploration with a guide.
The Metropolitan authority manages the Vieux Salins on Conservatoire du littoral land. Staying on the public route is part of the visit, as is keeping away from nesting islands and restricted banks.
The reference address is Rue de Saint-Nicolas in the Vieux Salins village; the Metropolitan authority recommends the municipal stadium car park for the Espace Nature. Check current opening hours and the programme if you want an activity or guided visit. The open landscape offers little protection from sun and wind. Bring water, a hat and an extra layer as appropriate.
