Start exploring Hyères’ old town at Place Massillon and the Templar tower. Streets climb towards Saint-Paul church, gardens and the upper town. Extend the walk with Sainte-Claire or Saint-Bernard garden, or an exhibition at Villa Noailles.

More about your visit

Place Massillon and the Templar tower give you a clear starting point. Explore the lanes, then decide how high to go according to the heat, your footwear and the group’s energy. Saint-Paul collegiate church and the upper neighbourhoods invite you to look up, but reaching the castle is not essential to appreciating the town. For someone with limited walking ability or a family with a pushchair, choose a short route and check access carefully: an overhead map does not show steps or gradients.

Saint-Bernard and Sainte-Claire gardens offer two ways to gain height. Villa Noailles adds an artistic and architectural dimension. If an exhibition appeals, consult its official page first and arrange the walk around your chosen time. Without going indoors, the old town still has enough interest for a half-day on foot.

Keep lunch or coffee within the area you are exploring to avoid unnecessary descents and climbs. Carry water and save uphill sections for cooler hours. Plan the return towards Toulon too: Hyères railway station and the medieval streets are not the same place, and the last part of the journey needs calculating.
