Visit the Cours Lafayette market in the morning for fruit, vegetables or picnic supplies. From the port, walk up past the stalls, then towards Cours Paul-Lendrin and the streets around the cathedral.
More about your visit
Begin at the harbour end, walk up the street, then slip into the smaller lanes and Cours Paul-Lendrin. Make a first circuit without buying: you can identify the stalls that appeal to you and avoid carrying a heavy bag too early. Look at labels and ask where produce comes from rather than assuming everything is grown nearby.
If you are staying in an apartment, the market can replace a restaurant meal: choose seasonal vegetables, bread, cheese and fruit. Buy delicate products at the end of your walk and bring a cool bag if you are not heading straight home.
Carry on to Halles Biltoki to compare an open-air market with a covered food hall, then head into the old town’s squares. The cathedral and Rue des Arts can complete the morning, but leave room for a break: part of the market’s appeal is simply taking time to watch.
